NYC Subway Baby: Mother of Abandoned Child Identified, Arrested
The woman accused of abandoning her 7-month-old baby on a New York City subway platform has been identified as 20-year-old Frankea Dabbs.
Dabbs was arrested early Tuesday after police said she intentionally left her daughter strapped in a stroller at the Columbus Circle subway stop in Manhattan Monday morning. Police said that when the train doors opened, Dabbs pushed the baby's stroller off the train and onto the platform. She then jumped back on the train around 11:50 a.m., the New York Daily News reported.
Another woman saw the baby girl all alone on the platform and waited 20 minutes for an adult to return. However, when no one showed up, she told a subway worker who called police.
Authorities said a tipster spotted the mother at a Manhattan Starbucks around 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday, about 12 hours after she abandoned her baby.
Dabbs was then arrested and charged with child abandonment and acting in a manner injurious to a minor under the age of 17 on Tuesday, police said.
In a preliminary interview, she told detectives that she is from originally from North Carolina and came to New York on July 2 after the baby's father was murdered in an armed robbery.
"She felt she couldn't take care of the baby and thought she was leaving her in a safe public space," said NYPD spokesman Stephen Davis, CBS New York reported.
She also told police that she is homeless.
The baby was taken to St. Luke's Hospital and reported to be in good condition. Besides suffering from eczema, officials said the baby was fine and has been placed in the care of the city's Administration for Children's Services.
According to the NY Daily News, Dabbs has a history with run-ins with the law. She was arrested twice for prostitution and also has an active warrant out for her arrest in North Carolina for marijuana possession. The mother also suffers from mental illness.
