World Cup 2014 News and Roster: Why Arjen Robben Says Argentina Won’t Stand a Chance Against Germany
Netherlands star Arjen Robben believes that Germany will win against Argentina in their upcoming 2014 World Cup final showdown on Sunday at the Estadio Maracana in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
In an interview with Kicker, Robben, whose team lost to Argentina in the semifinals on penalties, said that he has no doubt Brazil will win this year's World Cup.
"Germany's going to win the World Cup. No doubt about that. The Argentines will not stand a chance," Robben said.
Robben and the Dutch squad engaged in a grueling defensive two-hour match against Argentina on Wednesday before bidding goodbye to their title hopes after losing in the penalty shootout.
But while Robben is convinced that Germany will cruise to a victory in the upcoming World Cup 2014 final on Sunday, Argentine legend Diego Maradona thinks otherwise.
Maradona, who was instrumental in Argentina's 3-2 win against West Germany in the 1986 World Cup, expressed confidence that the current Argentina squad has what it takes to repeat their feat 28 years ago.
Maradona said that the Germany is beatable despite coming off a scintillating 7-1 win against host Brazil in their semi-final showdown on Tuesday.
"Germany is not impossible," Maradona said via ESPN FC. "Argentina can do it. Against Algeria, we saw one Germany, and against Brazil [we saw] another. But we all expected it to be Brazil. Argentina are going in strengthened. Once again Argentine football is back at the top. The jersey had lost prestige. Today it got it back."
Maradona admitted, though, that Argentina did not play well in the semifinals, but he praised the team's defense, particularly Javier Mascherano and Marcos Rojo, for stopping Robben and Wesley Sneijder in their tracks.
"Argentina did not play well, but they did not let Netherlands play well," Maradona said. "That was so important. Argentina pressed them on the pitch. Sneijder was not allowed to have one shot at goal. Robben was always pushed inside. He had Mascherano who was on top of him with Rojo."
