Kesha Rehab & Weight: Singer Says She Felt 'Being Sick' & 'Skinny' Was Part of Her Job
Earlier this year Kesha checked herself into rehab for an eating disorder, and the singer has opened up about her body issues.
"I was worried what people would think," she said in an op-ed piece. "I was battling an eating disorder -- but I knew people would assume I was there for other things."
It was a reasonable worry as people did assume that Kesha was covering up a drug addiction. Her mother, who accompanied the singer to the facility, had to come out and defend her.
Kesha knew that she was branded a party girl because of her music, which she says is further from the truth.
'Sure, I've written songs about partying, but my dirty little secret is that I'm actually incredibly responsible. I take my music and career very seriously, and certainly didn't land in this situation from partying. But I was cut off from the outside world and I imagined people making up stories at a time when what I really needed was support."
But her music was also making her feel like a fraud. She told others to love themselves, but she wasn't able to do it for herself. She had made herself believe that "being sick, being skinny, was part" of her job as a pop star.
Kesha stayed at a Chicago facility for two months.
"I knew I was ready to leave when I'd gained enough confidence to get on a plane knowing there would be paparazzi at the airport at the other end," she said. "I was right -- they were there. But this time, when I saw the pictures, I felt OK."
The singer admits that she's not completely fixed, but that she knows she wants to help others. She doesn't want to be part of the problem.
