'Frozen' PS4 Available in Japan: System With Etched Anna & Elsa on Sale for $424
A special "Frozen" PlayStation 4 will be available in Japan. The system will differ from a regular PS4 only in that it will have "Frozen" characters Anna and Elsa etched into the system.
Given that the movie is hugely popular in Japan -- it was the top movie at the box office for 16 straight weeks -- it makes sense that Japanese gamers are going to want "Frozen" memorabilia, but this one is a little bit of a head-scratcher.
It'll go on sale July 16, and it'll cost 42,980 Yen. That's about $424 in the U.S. The etching is the only unique thing about the system.
Potential buyers of this special PS4 are warned in the advertisement that no "Frozen" movie or game is included. That's where the head scratching occurs.
A deal with Disney could have helped Sony and Disney market this system a little better, but maybe since "Frozen" is so popular in Japan, the themed game console will fly off the shelves.
In the U.S., buyers won't be as lucky. There won't be a special "Frozen" PS4. The only thing U.S. gamers can do is create their own personalized system by purchasing "Frozen" decals.
There is a "Frozen" video game, but it's for the handheld Nintendo DS, not the PS4.
Even if the the special edition "Frozen" console isn't a huge hit, Sony is smart to give this venture a try. The movie has grossed $1.267 billion worldwide, so clearly people love it, and gamers in Japan might too.
