White House Bomb Threat Breaking News Update: Unattended Package on North Lawn Causes Lockdown
The White House was placed on a brief lockdown after an unattended package was found near the North Lawn on Thursday afternoon.
According to the New York Daily News, a White House lockdown was mandated around 3:50 p.m. on Thursday when a suspicious package was discovered. However, by 4:30 p.m., the Daily News reported that the "lockdown has been cleared."
During the lockdown, several White House reporters tweeted that they were being held in the press area while the Secret Service investigated the package.
"#WhiteHouse ABC says a package was found on the fence line of the White House North Lawn, which resulted in the lockdown," tweeted @EWNReporter, followed by "#WhiteHouse A Secret Service spokesperson says officers are sweeping the area & will check to see if the package has dangerous content."
Lafayette Park, which a small public park located across the street from the White House, was also cleared by officials, reports NBC News.
Meanwhile, during the lockdown, President Barack Obama was in New York City to help raise campaign money for the Democratic Party and the House Majority PAC, a group trying to help Democrats win seats in the House. The president is set to attend separate private events which will be held at homes in Manhattan. The events will be closed to media coverage.
Last week, a new poll revealed that the Muslim community is filled with faithful supporters of President Obama.
According to the recent Gallup poll, the president's approval rating is overwhelmingly higher among Muslims than any other religious group in the country. The poll survey over 88,800 Americans across the nation from January to June and found that 72 percent of Muslims approve of the president, compared with just 20 percent who say they disapprove.
In contrast, Mormons are the least approving religious group--only 18 percent say that they approved of Obama while 78 percent disapproved.
