Lakers News and Rumors 2014: Kobe Bryant Happy With Los Angeles’ Offseason Moves
Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant said that he is happy with the effort of their front office to retool their roster this summer in hopes turning their fortunes around next season.
The Lakers missed out on their top targets in this year's free-agency period. They gauged LeBron James' interest to play in Los Angeles, while also offered a maximum deal to Carmelo Anthony. Both attempts failed as James decided to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers, while Anthony re-signed with the New York Knicks.
Los Angeles also failed to re-sign All-Star center Pau Gasol, who accepted a three-year, $22 million deal with the Chicago Bulls, ending his long-time partnership with Bryant.
But while the Lakers failed to make landscape-changing signings or trades this summer, Bryant is still happy with the Lakers' offseason moves this year, according to ESPN's Ramona Shelburne.
"I can sit here and tell you with 100 percent honesty that I'm happy with the effort the organization put forward this summer," Bryant said.
Bryant added that he felt that general manager Mitch Kupchak made the necessary moves to make roster improvements despite failing to sign another superstar and losing Gasol in the process.
The Lakers acquired Jeremy Lin in a trade with the Houston Rockets, and the 25-year-old point guard is expected to have a strong chance of becoming the team's starting point guard next season, especially if Steve Nash continues to struggle with injuries next season.
The Lakers also drafted promising power forward Julius Randle as the seventh pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, while also picking Jordan Clarkson in the second round to improve backcourt depth.
Los Angeles also won the blind bidding for Carlos Boozer after the Chicago Bulls used their amnesty option on the All-Star power forward. Boozer is expected to play a vital role for the Lakers next season, while also serving as Randle's mentor as the rookie transitions from a one-year stint in college.
Meanwhile, Gasol also confirmed that Bryant supported his move to the Bulls this summer. Bryant has been very vocal about his desire to continue playing alongside Gasol, but the veteran center opted for a change of scenery this offseason.
"It was difficult to talk to him, but he was very supportive and he understood," Gasol said via ESPN Chicago. "He just said I had to do what was best for me and what felt right for me and he was going to support me no matter what. That's what friends and brothers do, and that's what we are."
