NFL Offseason News: Baltimore Ravens’ Ray Rice Gets 2-Game Suspension for Assaulting Fiancee; Josh Gordon Appeals Ban
Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice was handed a two-game suspension after getting arrested on assault charges, multiple reports confirmed on Thursday.
ESPN reported that Rice, who was arrested this offseason after allegedly knocking his then-fiancée Janay Palmer out in February in a casino elevator in New Jersey, was also fined $58,000 and will not receive payment in the Ravens' first two games this season.
Sources also indicated that Rice, who will not play in Baltimore's match against AFC North rivals Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers, will also be ordered to take counseling and could face stiffer sanctions if he commits another action violating the league's personal conduct policy.
In March, the 27-year-old RB was indicated by a grand jury on a third-degree assault for knocking Palmer out and dragging her outside the casino elevator. But a day after the indication, Rice and Palmer were married.
While no formal charges or conviction were made, the NFL can suspend a player for violating the league's policy on personal conduct.
Rice entered a program for first-time offenders where he promised not to commit the same mistake again and pledged to become a role model in the future.
"Sometimes in life you will fail, but I won't call myself a failure," Rice said via USA Today. "One thing that I do know is that I am working every day to be a better father, a better husband, a better role model."
Meanwhile, Cleveland Browns star wide receiver Josh Gordon is set to meet with NFL officials on Aug. 1 to appeal his one-year suspension, ESPN reported on Thursday.
Gordon, who had 87 catches for 1,646 yards in 14 games last season, is facing a one-year ban after failing a drug test earlier in the offseason, violating NFL's drug policy.
Browns coach Mike Pettine recently expressed concern on Gordon's status as they are still awaiting the league's official ruling to know whether or not they will play with the 23-year-old wide receiver in the 2014 season.
"It is concerning and you want to address it, but until we know where he stands with the league we don't know really where he stands with us," Pettine said via ESPN. "I've stated before that we've had the meetings, we've discussed all the options, from the best case to the worst case. And we're still in that mode of waiting."
