Plans change often in the NBA, especially when it comes to unsatisfied star players looking for a change of scenery.

Case in point, enter Kevin Love, who withdrew from the 2014 FIBA World Cup recently.

The three-time NBA All-Star, set to be one of the most coveted free agents on the NBA free agency market next summmer, was selected to be on the team. However, because of his "current status," which is code for his current contract situation with the Minnesota Timberwolves, he has chosen not to participate. Love still has two years remaining on his contract with the Timberwolves, and the second year has an opt-out option. Love has expressed his desire to be traded numerous times, but he hasn't got his wish yet. Playing in the FIBA World Cup could put him at risk of injury and a team may not want trade for him then.

Reading between the lines, however, Love's electing to sit out of the tournament could mean that a trade may be close to coming true sooner than expected.

This NBA offseason was one of the most exciting for basketball fans. Viewers witnessed LeBron James return home to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Carmelo Anthony remain in New York with the Knicks, as well as Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade stick together in Miami. With Pau Gasol now with the Chicago Bulls, Love is by far the biggest name floating around among potentially obtainable players as his contract nears expiration after next season.

Love missing the FIBA World Cup isn't devastating by any means. The best players rarely show up and Love already helped Team USA win a gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics while going undefeated. The FIBA Basketball Tournament isn't the gold standard for basketball competitions, so this won't hurt Love's legacy in any way. The bigger picture is looking at what the decision may mean for the man who will be arguably the most sought-after free agent in the NBA next summer.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are still the frontrunners to land Love. Many NBA insiders have said that LeBron James wants to play with Love. The Cavaliers signed Andrew Wiggins less than a week ago, after he was drafted No. 1 overall by them. This means that Wiggins cannot be traded for at least another month. It's still possible that a Wiggins-for-Love deal could take place, but it looks like the Cavaliers want to keep both players. Beggers can't be choosers.

The Timberwolves, who have struggled for years, are playing a somewhat dangerous game here. If they are unable to trade Love -- who has expressed desire to play for a contender in the past -- there's a good, no, a great chance he will walk away next season. The Timberwolves may have to get less than want in return, but some value is better than no value at all. Although Love is a very talented scorer and a phenomenal three point shooter for his position, he is still a questionable defender and teammate.

Love already participated in the 2010 FIBA World Cup, where we saw the United States victorious over Turkey in the championship game. This will open a roster spot for a younger player who has never played before. There's no reason Love should risk his health as a veteran player, especially considering he already has a gold medal in both the Olympics and FIBA already.

The 2014 FIBA World Cup will be played in Spain and begins on Aug. 30.
