Detroit Death: 8-year-old Boy Killed While Sleeping
A young Detroit boy was killed early Wednesday when bullets fired into his bedroom and struck him while he was sleeping.
According to police, 8-year-old Jakari Pearson was taken to a hospital and was pronounced dead on arrival, CBS Detroit Reports. Reports also said Jakari's mother was taken to the hospital for a gunshot wound, but her status was unknown.
Neighbors on the 600 block of East Street, where the townhouse Pearson was killed in is located, said gunshots are not unusual to the area. However, they did add that this was the first time they could remember a child being killed due to the gunfire.
A woman in the area, Beatrice Spears, has three children, ages 10, 7 and 3. She said the boy was an "innocent bystander," adding that Pearson would regularly play with her own children.
"It's such a tragedy," Spears, 27, added. "I'm not gonna be able to sleep."
Pearson's family members in the neighborhood declined to comment to the press. A man identified as Jakari's father at one point charged gathered reporters, shouting while another man restrained him.
Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody said authorities have a "good idea" of who is responsible and are currently working to track down the person. However, details about the suspect were not released.
"Unfortunately, we can't talk too much about that just yet as we are in the very early stages of this investigation," Woody said. "We hope the community continues to talk to us and feeds us information so we can track this individual down and get him into custody very quickly."
Outside Pearson's home, a superhero-printed sheet or pajama set were left on the townhome's stoop. Spears placed a stuffed animal at the top of the steps and said a candlelight vigil was being planned for Pearson.
Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call the national Crimestoppers hotline.
