Angelina Jolie Mastectomy: Actress Returns To Work For First Time Since Breast Surgery
Angelina Jolie is officially back at work.
According to E! News, the Oscar-winning actress was spotted at work yesterday, for the first time since she announced in May that she underwent a preventative double mastectomy. The high-profile A-Lister was seen on the set of her latest film "Unbroken," a new movie written by the Coen brothers ("Fargo," "No Country For Old Men," "The Big Lebowski") that Jolie is directing.
"The movie is a chronicle of the life of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic runner who was taken prisoner by Japanese forces during World War II," E! writes.
Jolie first revealed she had a double mastectomy in an op-ed for the New York Times, in which she wrote that she underwent the surgery back in February, after doctors found she had around an 87 percent risk of contracting breast cancer due to a "faulty" gene. She also revealed that she had a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer.
"I wanted to write this to tell other women that the decision to have a masectomy was not easy," Jolie wrote in her op-ed piece. "But it is one I am very happy I made. My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent. I can tell my children that they don't need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer."
The 38-year-old actress and humanitarian further went on to explain the importance of her partner Brad Pitt's support. Jolie and Pitt have been in a relationship since 2005 and have six children together.
"Brad was at the Pink Lotus Breast Center, where I was treated, for every minute of the surgeries," she wrote. "We managed to find moments to laugh together. We knew this was the right thing to do for our family and that it would bring us closer. And it has."
She also encouraged women, especially those with families that have a history of ovarian and breast cancer, to seek information and get tested.
In July, Forbes named Jolie 2013's highest-paid Hollywood actress. Aside from directing "Unbroken," Jolie's next high-profile movie is Disney's "Malificent," in which she'll play the title role as the "Sleeping Beauty" villainess. "Malificent" is set to be released Jul. 2, 2014.
