Season 6 of the "The Vampire Diaries" will be filled with shocking twists and turns, including the possibility that Bonnie and Damon will hook up.

The Season 5 finale of TVD ended with a major cliffhanger when Damon and Bonnie died after they were cast into the white light as The Other Side was destroyed, notes Air Herald.

At the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con, show runner Julie Plec announced that the characters have indeed died and can no longer come back. However, she teased that they will be featured in special show appearances next season.

There is also speculation that the two characters are actually trapped in limbo and could ended up getting really close to one another, and may be even closer than friends.

Although Plec has neither confirmed nor denied the theory that their love-hate relationship will blossom into a romance, she did tease that actress Kat Graham and actor Ian Somerhalder's close off-screen relationship could translate to great chemistry on camera.

"You never know, but what we did want to do is we wanted to service the Bamon relationship from the books and at least give those two characters an opportunity -- that we never thought we'd have frankly cause they never liked each other, and for good reason -- to bond and get close and to be comrades," said Plec, according to MoviePilot.com. "So it will start there, and it may never go any further--that's not the plan, but you never know," added TVD writer and producer.

The executive producer also recently opened up about how Elena will cope with the death of her lover, indicating that she will be alone for a while.

"I'll just say that I think it'd be super sad for a young woman in her vibrant, early years to take her life and die on the sword for the love of a man. As much as I am a romantic and believe in true love, I also believe in therapy and trying to pull yourself together and getting on with your life," Plec told TVLine.

Meanwhile, the EP teased that fans can expect to see more crossovers from "The Originals" whose characters will visit Mystic Falls. She said that the writers and producers are always "talking about different paths" to incorporate crossovers.

Season 6 of "The Vampire Diaries" will return to The CW on Oct. 2 at 8 p.m. EST.
