NBA Offseason 2014 News: Greg Oden Arrested in Indianapolis for Punching Ex-Girlfriend in the Face
Greg Oden was arrested in Indianapolis on Thursday morning after allegedly punching his ex-girlfriend in the face during an argument, multiple reports confirmed.
According to WTHR, Oden was taken into custody at the Marion County Jail and was booked on two preliminary charges -- a Class A misdemeanor for battery with injuries involved and a Class B misdemeanor for battery.
Sources indicated that the Lawrence Police Department received a call at around 3:30 a.m. EST on Thursday. When they arrived at Oden's mother's house, police officers found a bloodied woman lying on the sofa with one witness confirming that the former Ohio State standout punched the injured woman.
One of Oden's relatives also confirmed that the former first-overall pick and the girl had an argument, while also adding that "every time the two visit and go out, there is an argument to follow."
Oden told officers that the two of them recently broke up after going out for two years. The 26-year-old center admitted that he went after the victim and his relatives tried to hold him back, but resisted their efforts and punched the 24-year-old woman.
"Things got out of control and I started to go after the victim. My relative and witness tried to hold me back, but as I swung my arms to move them out of the way, then punched the victim in the face. I was wrong and I know what has to happen," Oden said.
Officer Gary Woodruff said that Oden was fully cooperative during the arrest and booking, and the three-year NBA veteran is reportedly aware of possible ramifications for his inappropriate actions.
"He was cooperative with our officers at the scene," Woodruff said of Oden. "Sometimes making an arrest is the best resource, sometimes it's not. But in this case, the officers felt making an arrest based on the probable cause was the best course of action."
Oden, whose professional basketball career has been derailed by knee issues, averaged 2.9 points and 2.3 rebounds in 23 regular season games with the Miami Heat last season.
