NBA: LeBron James Talks Kevin Love Trade Rumors, Vows to Stay With Cleveland Cavaliers
LeBron James was welcomed by Cleveland Cavaliers fans on Friday at the University of Akron football stadium, and the four-time Most Valuable Player vowed that he won't leave Cleveland again.
James, who decided to return to Cleveland after spending four seasons with the Miami Heat, said that he has no plans to leave the Cavaliers again, reiterating that winning an NBA championship for his hometown fans is his priority.
"My No. 1 goal is to win a championship here; it'd be the greatest achievement in my life," James said via ESPN. "I don't plan on going nowhere. I don't have the energy to do it again."
James signed a two-year deal worth $42 million with the Cavaliers -- a short-term deal that fueled speculations that he would enter free agency again in the summer of 2016.
The 29-year-old superstar, who averaged 27.1 points to go along with 6.9 rebounds and 6.4 assists per game, clarified though that he decided to sign a short-term contract for business reasons.
Reports indicated that the NBA salary cap and financial terms of a maximum contract could jump dramatically in the summer of 2016 once the league finalizes new television deals.
"At the end of the day, I'm a businessman as well," James said. "I know what is going on in the league."
James, who won two championships in four seasons with the Heat, also talked about the reported trade that would send Kevin Love to Cleveland before the end of the month.
The 11-year veteran said that his former USA Basketball teammate would be a key piece to their title aspirations, saying that Love is one of the smartest players in the league.
"If he comes aboard, I will be very excited to have him," James said of Love. "I don't even really care about the 26 [points] and 12 [rebounds], I care about his basketball IQ. His basketball IQ is very, very high. I had the opportunity to spend 32 days with him in the 2012 Olympics. He was huge for us, he's a great piece."
Recent reports indicated that the Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves already agreed in principle about a trade involving Love and 2014 first overall pick Andrew Wiggins, and the deal will be finalized on Aug. 23 when the rookie sensation becomes eligible to be traded.
