'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' 2014 Movie Trailer, Cast News & Sequel: Film Dominates Box Office; Second Film on Deck?
The reboot of the well-known "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" franchise has proven to be highly successful, as the box office sale records have shown. But, just how successful has the movie's first weekend been? Well, successful enough for the announcement of a sequel.
Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies announced on Sunday that a "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" sequel was in the works and would be released on June 3, 2016, according to Entertainment Weekly.
The film's producer, Michael Bay, will return for the sequel as well as the movie's writers Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec; however, the movie's director, Jonathan Liebesman, was not confirmed for the sequel, reports Entertainment Weekly.
"To know moviegoers are embracing the 'Turtles' with such enthusiasm is everything that we and all our filmmakers have been hoping for," Paramount chairman and CEO Brad Grey said in a statement. "We are thrilled with this weekend's result, the enduring power of this franchise, and the opportunity to make another one."
Adam Goldman, president of Paramount's Film Group, added that it will be a hard task to come up with a storyline for the sequel "because as fans of them ourselves, we felt a great responsibility to ensure audiences were going to experience everything they loved about the Turtles, while also getting to see them brought to life in a way they had never been seen before. The result exceeded our high expectations and the response to the film is beyond great, making it all the more fun to get started on the continuation of their story."
Just how successful was the movie? According to the Wall Street Journal, the movie's first weekend in the U.S. and Canada earned around $65 million. The movie's budget was around $125 million.
On Friday, the movie made $25 million, according to Hollywood Reporter, and was already projected to overcome "Guardians of the Galaxy." The Wall Street Journal reported that it succeeded and "Guardians" came in second with $41.5 million.
