Immigration Reform 2014: KISS's Gene Simmons Tells Immigrants to Learn 'Goddamn English' For Success
Gene Simmons emigrated to the United States from Israel at age 8.
The KISS member was on HuffPost Live on Monday, where he talked about what immigrants need to do to find success in the United States.
"I'm actually saying the thing that needs to be said because the politically correct climate is bullsh*t," he said to Ricky Camilleri. "You don't want to upset anybody by saying, 'Learn to speak goddamn English.' So, as an immigrant, I'm telling you: Learn to speak goddamn English. It is the key that will unlock the keys to the kingdom."
When asked to clarify his comments, he didn't change his comment.
Instead he said, "How about this: If Siri can't understand you, you're in trouble."
In the 10-minute video, Simmons encourages people to get rid of their accent and to be a "legal immigrant." He also tells immigrants that they should assimilate to American culture.
When Camilleri asked if Simmons thought that maybe what he said was "easier said than done." Simmons agreed that it was difficult.
"But why should it be easy?" he said.
He added that older people emigrating should still make an effort to speak English so that it's easier for the next generation. He cited his mother as an example and said she still speaks with a thick accent.
Simmons added that he speaks five languages himself.
When Camilleri told Simmons that his comments could be taken as him saying that immigrants are lazy and don't want to learn the language, Simmons was surprised.
"The more you learn to speak English and the more you know about american history, the more of an advantage you'll have in this culture," he said.
Simmons also used Arianna Huffington as an example of what learning English could do for immigrants.
