The month of August will continue to unleash a number of promising blockbusters attempting to revive the box office.

After two surprising weekends, this week will see three big budget films that will attempt to capture the mass audience:

The Giver

Based on the celebrated and beloved novel by Lois Lowry, the new film tells the story of a young boy who is chosen to learn from an elderly man about the true pain and pleasure of the "real" world after living in a seemingly perfect community for a number of years. The film boasts a great cast that includes Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges, Alexander Skarsgard, Katie Holmes and Brenton Thwaites.

The Weinstein Company is releasing the film and has given the feature a big push. However, reviews have been mixed and critics have said the film lacks a distinctive look as it resembles too many YA books.

The company is releasing the film in 2,800 theaters but tracking does not look promising. According to early predictions, "The Giver" will open with $11 million. Given the lackluster box office for the Weinstein Company, this feature is unlikely to become the box office hit the company hoped for. However, it is likely to attract fans of the novel.

The Expendables 3

After two successful installments, Lionsgate is releasing the third film hoping to obtain the same success. The new film tells the story of Barney who augments his team with new blood for a personal battle. This time, he will attempt to take down Conrad Stonebanks, the Expendables' co-founder and notorious arms trader who is hell-bent on wiping out Barney and every single one of his associates.

"The Expendables 3" will reunite the most popular action stars including Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Harrison Ford, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mel Gibson, Antonio Banderas and Kellan Lutz.

Box office analysts are predicting the movie will open with $23 million which is far less with from the first two installments. However, given the popularity of the series it could easily surprise. While reviews are terrible, these films are critic proof. Lionsgate will release "The Expendables 3" in 3,000 and should easily do solid business.

Let's Be Cops

Fox will release the new comedy about two struggling pals who dress as police officers for a costume party and become neighborhood sensations. When these newly-minted "heroes" get tangled in a real life web of mobsters and dirty detectives, they must put their fake badges on the line.

The film starring Jake Johnson, Damon Wayans and Andy Garcia has been getting a huge marketing push and is expected to be the surprise comedy hit of the summer. After a number of disappointments, this feature is predicted to open with $23 million. With a lack of comedies in the market right now Fox will release "Let's Be Cops" in 3,000 theaters.

Frank

Magnolia will release the Sundance hit after screening at a number of festivals. The film tells the story of Jon, a young wanna-be musician, who discovers he's bitten off more than he can chew when he joins an eccentric pop band led by the mysterious and enigmatic Frank.

"Frank" is directed by the acclaimed helmer Lenny Abrahamson and stars Michael Fassbender, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Scoot McNairy, and Domhnall Gleeson. The movie has obtained rave reviews and has caused a lot of buzz after the stars appeared on "The Colbert Report" to perform from the film.

Additionally, the mask that Fassbender wears throughout the movie has also gotten a lot of attention. As a result, Magnolia has decided to release the film in limited release and will not open it on VOD as the company usually does with its films.

Life After Beth

After having been available on Direct TV, A24 will release the film in theaters. The Zombie comedy, which stars Aubrey Plaza, Dane DeHaan and John C. Reilly, tells the story of a young man's recently deceased girlfriend who mysteriously returns from the dead, but he slowly realizes she is not the way he remembered her. The movie opened at Sundance where it scored mixed reviews. With very little marketing, this new film will likely only play to specialty to audiences.

The Trip to Italy

After three years, Michael Winterbottom is bringing the sequel to highly acclaimed "The Trip." The sequel reunites Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon and the story of two men, six meals in six different places on a road trip around Italy.

"The Trip to Italy" premiered at Sundance where it was loved by critics. Most said that, while it is not as good as the original, it is still fresh and enjoyable. IFC Films plans on releasing the movie in theaters and hopes to reach the same success the original film had.

Other films that will open in theaters include the New York Film Festival selection "Jealousy," Monterey Media's Fort McCoy and Breaking Glass Pictures' "Coldwater."
