A deadly fight and stabbing at a Houston-area high school on Wednesday left one student dead and three others injured, officials said.

According to the Associated Press, three students described as "persons of interest" were taken into custody.

The stabbing occurred at around 7 a.m. local time at Spring High School, which is about 25 miles north of downtown Houston, the Harris County Sherrif's office said. The school has more than 3,000 students and its own police.

Students said the incident occurred at a cafeteria. According to the Los Angeles Times, one student even tweeted a photo of the scene and said there was "blood everywhere."

"We believe a confrontation of some sort occurred ... that ultimately led into a physical confrontation that produced weapons," Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia said. "There has been some information that this may have been gang related."

Meanwhile, there are others who contradict Garcia's comments.

"It was an ongoing battle between kids [of different races]," Pastor E.A. Deckard said, according to the LA Times. "A simple misunderstanding that has been ongoing over a period of time.... This was not gang violence."

Garcia did not confirm that a knife was used in the stabbing, only saying that a "cutting instrument" was used.

One parent of a student at the school said she fears for her daughter's health and wanted to homeschool her. "Last year there were gang fights consistently," Tara Campbell said. "This is ridiculous. This is an ongoing situation."

The school was placed on lockdown following the incident, but students were eventually released to their parents.
