Top 15 Most Wanted: Couple Captured in Oregon
A couple that has been wanted since 2009 was finally caught by U.S. Marshalls in Oregon. The couple had been on the run for years having left Mississippi and losing the police following them.
U.S. Marshalls arrested the couple, Janet and Ramon Barreto, on Tuesday in Portland, Oregon, after years on the lam, according to WAPT News. The couple disappeared in 2009 when they were released on a $450,000 bond. Police believed the couple headed to Mexico, but later sightings reported the couple in southern California.
The couple was arrested at a shopping center Tuesday afternoon and refused to identify themselves to police, according to the Clarion-Ledger. They were later identified by their fingerprints. The couple was arrested back in 2008 for child neglect, child abuse, tampering with a witness and manslaughter in the death of Enna Barreto, the couple's 2-year-old adopted daughter, as well as the abuse of six other children.
Following their disappearance, the couple was placed in the U.S. Marshall's 15 Most Wanted List in 2013.
Police raided the Barreto resident back in 2008 after reports of child abuse only to discover an abused Enna. The toddler later died at Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center in Memphis, Tennessee, according to the Clarion-Ledger.
"There were certainly some highs and lows over the years, but we never forgot one of those children lost their lives with that incident and that's what started the whole case," Sheriff Jimmy Edwards said. "We have a lot of friends at the Marshal Service, and we help each other. They never gave up and we never gave up."
Now that the couple is in custody again, but their trial will be the District Attorney's office's top priority, according to District Attorney Ben Creekmore. Aside from child abuse, the couple had also ran a puppy mill with more than 180 dogs and 25 cats.
According to the Christian Science Monitor, "Child abuse or neglect [in the U.S.] against more than 6 million children is reported every year, and an average of at least four children a day die from maltreatment."
