World of Warcraft Adds Robin Williams Character: Fans Petition Blizzard for Well-Loved Actor and Gamer
Aside from being a multi-talented actor and a doting father, Robin Williams was an avid gamer, who even named his daughter Zelda after the video game's lead character in The Legend of Zelda. He had long stated that he loved The World of Warcraft, which is played by about 6.8 million people online, among other video games, according to Boston Herald.
Robin Williams used to play on its Mannoroth server. He fully enjoyed the experience of online gaming and pitting his skills against other players. He said during one interview that it was totally addicting and that often he would forget the time while playing online.
With his passing, thousands of fans sent a petition to World of Warcraft's maker, Blizzard Entertainment, to immortalize Robin Williams with a WoW character so that he could still be with them and continue to entertain them, according to the Independent News Service. The petition was started by a member of the World of Warcraft Community, Jacob Holgate.
Blizzard Entertainment had received about 11,000 petitions for them to develop a character for the well-loved actor who was very vocal about his being an avid gamer. He was able to complete World of Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos when it came out in 2002.
Lead game designer of Blizzard Entertainment Ion Hazzikostas said that they are responding to the fans' request, although they have not decided on what character they'll give Robin Williams. He said that the character will very likely be inspired by Williams himself as an avid gamer, comedian and actor. He added that the character could be inspired by the some of the actor's favorite roles. It is also undecided whether Robin Williams' character will be an NPC.
Incidentally, the World of Warcraft movie, which takes place in the world of Azeroth, will have its initial release on March 9, 2016, in France.
