'Orange Is the New Black': Mike Birbiglia to Join Cast of Netflix Series
Comedian and actor Mike Birbiglia will be joining the cast of "Orange Is the new Black" in a "recurring role," reports The Hollywood Reporter.
Though Birbiglia's specific role has not been revealed to the public, "OITNB" creator Jenji Kohan revealed to THR that the show's upcoming third season focuses on "faith, to a certain extent."
Time suggests that Birbiglia's mystery role may be what most OITNB" male actors play on the show-a love interest, a relative of one of the prisoners, or a prison guard.
However, Vanity Fair's Katey Rich is hopeful that Birbiglia's role will break the typical role of male characters on the show.
"Given his role as a group counselor in The Fault in Our Stars, Birbiglia could easily show up as a warmhearted psychologist type, or even a guard who allows himself to be softer than any of the others. But I'm hoping we get to see Birbiglia stretch into something darker, changing his usual friendly face into something that, like nearly everything else we've seen on the show, is hardened by the prison system. Or we could just watch him swapping one-liners with Laverne Cox; that would be pretty great too," Rich writes.
In addition to his recent role in the box office hit "The Fault in Our Stars," Birbiglia's film and television credits include "Don't Mess With Texas," also starring Reese Witherspoon, HBO's "Girls," Amy Schumer's "Trainwreck" and the upcoming film "Annie" starring Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz.
Prior to "Orange Is the new Black," Birbiglia worked with Netflix on his comedy special.
Last year, Birbiglia released the comedy special, "My Girlfriend's Boyfriend" on Netflix, reports TIME.
In addition to Birbiglia, Blair Brown and Mary Steenburgen have also been added to the "Orange Is the new Black" cast.
