Derrick Rose Return Update: Tom Thibodeau Says Team USA Is a ‘Perfect Setting’ for Rose’s Comeback
Chicago Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau said that Derrick Rose's Team USA experience this summer will work well for the former Most Valuable Player and his team in the upcoming 2014-15 NBA season.
In an interview with Sam Smith of Bulls.com, Thibodeau, who also serves as one the assistant coaches of Team USA, said that Rose's possible participation in the upcoming 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup is a "perfect setting" for his return next season.
Thibodeau is optimistic that Rose will regain his old form and improve his confidence similar to what happened after the 2010 World Championships. The 25-year-old point guard was named MVP after his Team USA stint.
"This is the perfect setting for him," Thibodeau said. "I thought his first experience in 2010 was the springboard to his MVP season. All summer long he's gotten more comfortable."
Thibodeau said that Bulls have been waiting for the USA Basketball training camp since the offseason started, knowing that they will have a good look at Rose's progress following a surgery that repaired a torn meniscus in his right knee.
"It's something he really wanted to do," Thibodeau said of Rose's participation in USA Basketball camp. "It's a chance for him to measure where he really is. He's not carrying the burden of the entire team. For Derrick, there are so many positives. I think this will be great preparation for the season."
The 56-year-old coach added that he was impressed with the way Rose performed during their minicamp in Las Vegas and in their recent tune-up game against Brazil at the United Center in Chicago.
"I love the way he's playing," Thibodeau said. "He's finding the rhythm of game and playing to his strengths and recognizing who's on the floor with him and what their strengths are."
Rose averaged 15.9 points to go along with 4.3 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game, but went down with a season-ending injury just in his 10th game coming off an ACL injury in his left knee.
