Louis van Gaal's debut did not go the way he expected.

The Dutch manager, straight off a terrific 2014 FIFA World Cup with the Netherlands, was expected to come into Manchester and deliver a championship-caliber side. Van Gaal did previously state that his club was not complete and that it lacked some pieces, but many expected his new 3-5-2 to have tremendous impact immediately.

It didn't work out the way it was expected to, however.

In fact, Van Gaal's start to the 2014-15 was worse than that of his now infamous predecessor David Moyes. While Moyes got his men to win the Community Shield and then thump Swansea 4-1 away from home, Van Gaal actually lost 2-1 against the same team at home. Not a way to win over your fans immediately.

Of course Van Gaal, unlike Moyes, is a man with a tremendous track record that includes 20 club trophies as manager including one Champions League trophy and seven league awards.

But now, he enters arguably his great challenge ever. He is the leader of one of the biggest clubs in the world in a moment of major crisis. And his first try and fixing it has gone awry. So how does he fix it?

Javier Hernandez is a disaster. His poor performance in the opener should have made up Van Gaal's decision for him. Robin van Persie was sorely missed and the Mexican did little to help his team. He went missing for long stretches and finished proving that he simply does not belong. So selling him, and fast, is the first order of business.

The midfield is far from great. Jesse Lindgard and Ashley Young did not have great performances and neither did Darren Fletcher and recent acquisition Ander Herrera. Herrera will pay dividends in the future, but he is not going to carry this team right now. Marouane Fellaini, Nani and Adnan Januzaj were decent as subs, but hardly improved the situation in their respective positions. To fix the wing play and even the control in the pitch, Van Gaal needs to go after Angel Di Maria and Juan Cuadrado. The former is a tremendous creative player that would put Young and Lindgard to shame. He also proved that he could play in the middle of the park for Real Madrid, so he could provide Herrera with a more capable partner than Fletcher.

Cuadrado is a winger who can also track back and help out the three-man defense. His creative play and speed makes him a tremendous asset on the wings. He is a far better option than the often disastrous Nani.

Getting Daley Blind would also be a great option. The Dutchman was a revelation for Van Gaal during the World Cup. He is responsible defensive and also a tremendous weapon going forward. The connection he had with Robin van Persie during the World Cup could pay huge dividends for the Red Devils if he was acquired.

Finally, there is dire need for a top end center back. Tyler Blackett, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling did decent work in a horrid performance, but they will not be able to keep this ship afloat over the long haul. There is simply no way that a 3-5-2 is going to function with little more than mediocre defenders. Mats Hummels has been rumored as a potential target. If he is, then Van Gaal must do everything in his power to get him.
