MacBook Air vs. MacBook Pro Retina Comparison: The Specs and Pricing You Need to Know
The prices keep dropping on the MacBook laptops and Apple keeps making them slightly better. So which is right for you, the 2014 MacBook Air or the 2014 MacBook Pro Retina.
The MacBook Air received a small boost in processor speed, but also was given a permanent $100 price reduction. That means you can get a 13-inch MacBook Air for $999. But there are deals out there as well.
The latest MacBook Pro models received a free standard RAM upgrade. Now, all models come with 8 gigabytes (GB) of RAM. The entry level MacBook Pro retained its $1,299 price but it gets twice the amount of RAM.
It used to be a difference of only $200 between the 13-inch MacBook Air and the entry level MacBook Pro, but now it's a $300 difference thanks to the Air's price reduction.
A couple years ago, it was obvious which MacBook to choose depending on your usage habits. If you needed a powerful, speedy laptop that was capable of performing difficult tasks, you purchased a MacBook Pro. If you needed a light, less powerful machine ideal for travelers, you purchased the MacBook Air.
Now, the differences between the two are much less noticeable. Once Apple introduced the MacBook Pro Retina models, they became lighter and thinner than ever before. That alone could lure those looking to buy a MacBook Air back to the MacBook Pro. But, the MacBook Air too has received some updates.
The difference in weight and thickness is minimal now. Weighing just half a pound more than the MacBook Air, the MacBook Pro is definitely a lightweight laptop. It's also thinner than it's ever been before. The MacBook Air is tapered throughout its entire chasis so it appears much thinner than the Pro, but the MacBook Pro is only 1 milimeter thicker at its thickest point than the MacBook Air.
The battery life is the big difference between the two laptops. The MacBook Air can get nearly 13 hours of battery life while the MacBook Pro can get only about 9 hours of battery life.
If you need a lightweight laptop that gets the job done, get the Air.
If you need an ultra-powerful laptop that performs tons of task with speed and performance, get the Pro.
