George Zimmerman Taken Into Police Custody After Wife Says He Pulled Gun on Her
George Zimmerman has been taken into custody following a domestic altercation involving a gun, Lake Mary Police spokesperson Zach Hudson said.
CNN says Zimmerman is in "investigative custody." Local police chief Steve Bracknell told the Associated Press that Zimmerman's wife, Shellie, called police at around 2 p.m. on Monday.
The news comes just days after Shellie Zimmerman announced her plans to divorce. According to ABC News, her attorney says George pulled a knife on her today when she found a gun in their home. He then allegedly proceeded to pull a gun on her and her father after an argument escalated.
"There was some kind of a domestic, we know that with his wife and father-in-law. Apparently there were some weapons involved and threats," the police said to ABC News.
Zimmerman has stayed out of the spotlight since he was acquitted following a high-profile murder trial in the death of Trayvon Martin. Ever since the conclusion of the trial, he has only been seen after getting pulled over by the police on two separate occasions.
Shellie Zimmerman was recently found guilty of perjury after it was found that she lied to the courts about the couple's funds. When George was in jail, she talked to her husband in code to hide the fact that they had more money than they reported to others.
As part of her penalty for perjury, she was sentenced to a year of probation and cannot possess, carry, or own a firearm. If there was indeed a gun found in her home today, it would be interesting to see how this plays out with her probation requirements.
