Joan Rivers Dead at 81; Family Releases Statement
The world-renowned comedienne Joan Rivers has died after a routine procedure went awry a week ago. Rivers' daughter, Melissa Rivers, confirmed her mother's passing in a sudden statement following glimmers of hope for the veteran comedienne.
The 81-year-old comedienne was hospitalized at New York's Mount Sinai hospital a week ago following a case of respiratory and cardiac arrest at an endoscopy clinic in Manhattan. For a week, Rivers was in the intensive care unit until Tuesday when her daughter Melissa announced she had been moved.
"My mother has been moved out of intensive care and into a private room where she is being kept comfortable," Melissa said at the time, according to ABC News. Her mother was kept on life support.
However, Rivers' battle ended on Thursday when her daughter released a statement announcing the passing of her daughter, according to Deadline.
"It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers," Melissa said in a statement. "She passed peacefully at 1:17 PM surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother. Cooper and I have found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support, and prayers we have received from around the world. They have been heard and appreciated. My mother's greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon."
The comedienne had been a trailblazer, breaking out into a field dominated by men decades before the likes of Sarah Silverman and Amy Schumer. She published many books and starred in various television shows. The last of which were the WE show "Joan and Melissa: Joan Knows Best" and E!'s "Fashion Police."
According to CBS News, E! has announced that "Fashion Police" would go on a two-week hiatus due to Rivers' hospitalization though now that she has passed the show's future is uncertain.
The Associated Press is also reporting that the New York state Health Department has begun investigating the clinic Rivers attended before her death as well as the causes behind the incident.
