College Professor Accidentally Shoots Himself While Teaching Chemistry Class at Idaho State University
An Idaho State University assistant professor was in the middle of teaching his chemistry class on Tuesday when he accidentally shot himself in the foot with a concealed weapon.
According to Reuters, the college professor, who has not been identified, had an enhanced concealed-carry gun permit that allowed him to carry his semiautomatic handgun on campus, according to a new state law that went into effect on July 1. However, the gun, which was hidden in his pants' pocket, somehow discharged around 4 p.m. Tuesday while he was in a classroom with 19 students, police said on Wednesday.
Fortunately, no one beside the professor was hurt in the accident, and the instructor was released from a local hospital after being treated.
The shooting took place in a chemistry lab in Pocatello in a physical science department building, said Pocatello Police Lieutenant Paul Manning. Based on the new state law, guns are only restricted in areas of the physical science complex where there is nuclear research.
"Idaho State University is in compliance with the Idaho gun law. Yesterday's incident was an unfortunate accident," university President Arthur Vailas said in a statement.
Marketing and Communications Director Adrienne King said the school did not issue a lockdown or evacuation following the incident because it did not pose an imminent threat to the student body, which consists of 14,000 students.
"At this point it is believed to be an isolated incident," said the college spokeswoman to ABC affiliate KIDK. "We don't have any reason to believe students or anybody else in our Bengal community has any reason to be concerned."
Authorities are investigating what made the small-caliber weapon discharge, whether or not it had a safety protection and if the device was engaged at the time of the incident.
Criminal charges have not been filed at this time.
