Android L/Android Lion Release Date & Preview: What to Expect From Google's New Operating System
Google's new mobile operating system that is in the works, currently called Android L, may take on a new name if a partnership with Nestle takes place, PC Advisor reports.
Rumors suggest the Android L may be Android Lion, based on a leaked image by @EMTLeaks.
However, previous versions of Android have all been named after desserts or something similar like KitKat, Ice Cream Sandwich and Honeycomb.
The Android L is a newer and cleaner design of the mobile operating system. It will introduce a new design language, called "Material Design," which will be useful for developers to show depth and layers within their apps. In an additional change, navigational icons have been simplified to a triangle, circle and square.
Android L will also change the some of the essentials behind the interface. For example, the process virtual machine system in the core of Android will be replaced by a new engine called Android Runtime, which Google says improves application performance and may optimize battery usage. Project Volta allows developers to identify how their apps are using battery in order to make improvements, PC Advisor reports.
According to @EMTLeaks via TechRadar, the next phone will be simply called the Nexus 5 (2014), and specifications will have it with a 5.2-inch display running at a 2560 x 1440 resolution, a 2.7GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage and a 12MP camera. However, other leaks have the next device called the "Nexus X," with a bigger screen and running an Android 5.0 system called Android "Lemon Meringue Pie."
So it's safe to say none of the rumors, at this point, have zeroed in on any common, or seemingly credible, ground. The images of the "Lion" leak, as well as information about the new Nexus could all be fake.
No release date is known for Android L, but a Fall date, around Halloween or early November, is anticipated.
