Nearly 100-Year-Old Newlyweds Could Divorce After Family Claims Marriage Complicates Their Inheritance
At 96 years old, Edith Hill happily married her 95-year-old husband Eddie Harrison earlier this year after the two met 10 years ago. However, although they say they are in love, the law may not be on their side.
"He touched my heart. I fell in love with him," Hill told WJLA back in July.
The Virginia natives met 10 years ago while buying lottery tickets and then split a $2,500 winning ticket.
"I guess I wanted company," Hill told the Associated Press, explaining why she chose to say "I do" at nearly 100 years old.
"I wanted somebody I could help, and they could help me. ... We were both single. My husband was gone. His wife was gone. We became the best of friends," she added.
However, their union has sparked a heat legal battle over Hill's estate, which could force the couple to split.
According to a judge, because Hill is legally incapacitated, her daughter and co-guardian Rebecca Wright should never have facilitated the marriage without the court's permission. In addition, Wright's sister, Patricia Barber who opposes the marriage, claims the union complicates the division of Hill's $475,000 estate, which Harrison could now be entitled to inherit.
"Legally, Mr. Harrison now has a right to a portion of Ms. Hill's estate," Barber's legal rep Cary Cuccinelli told the judge.
"She wants to sell my mother's house. She wants the money," Wright told WUSA9.
If Barber does win this legal battle, then Hill and Harrison would be separated since she would have to move in with her or be put in a nursing home.
Although Judge James Clark ruled that the marriage was improper, he also worried that breaking up the couple could "create a circumstance in Ms. Hill's life that she doesn't deserve."
"They're not gonna separate us. No, we're not gonna let them," said Harrison.
Robin Wright, Hill's granddaughter, testifed that their relationship is real.
"You catch them kissing all the time," she said. "They're actually in love. Really in love. ... I know he's part of the reason she gets up every morning."
