Donald Glover 'Childish Gambino' Freestyle Video: '3005' Rapper Dishes on Drake, Credibility and Social Media [Watch]
Donald Glover, also known as Childish Gambino, recently dropped by Hot 97 for an interview. The talk radio host Peter Rosenberg cued up a loop song track and gave Gambino a minute to collect his thoughts before the artist delivered a talented freestyle.
In the four-minute long video Glover mentions hearing one of his own songs, "3005," on the radio for the first time while he's in his hometown Atlanta. He also mentions visiting Chicago and Fredo Santana, who was a recent collaborator. He goes on to rap about SPIN magazine's not-so-friendly coverage of his music and his upcoming mixtape. To sum it up, Gambino gave a very involved and thrilling freestyle.
This is something that most rappers would have trouble in doing, especially those who don't practice for rap battles. Gambino, although not a battle rapper, seems to be someone who can collect his thoughts quickly like a Lupe Fiasco or Kendrick Lamar.
His interview with Peter Rosenberg of Hot 97 was in-depth. He didn't pull any punches when the realness of hip-hop was mentioned, and the two talked lengthily about street credibility and the barriers that he had to face just to gain respect.
The artist also talked about the rapper Drake, to whom he is most often compared. Drake also often gets his credibility questioned.
Gambino said that his street credibility was always being tested by interviewers and he specifically mentioned the names of several critics who have openly made fun of him on social media, although Gambino said he was cool with it.
He also mentioned that his new mixtape would be dropping within two weeks.
In Glover's opinion, rap is done because it no longer does what it was supposed to do. He also talked about the poem that he wrote about the fatal shooting of Michael Brown, which made people upset. He defended his work by saying that what he wrote about, ultimately, was freedom.
