Adrian Peterson Child Abuse: Minnesota Vikings Bar Star Running Back From All Team Activities
The Minnesota Vikings announced that Adrian Peterson will be barred from all team activities as he was placed on the National Football League's exempt list until his child abuse case is resolved.
Vikings owner Zygi Wilf and Mark Wilf announced on Monday that Peterson, who is facing child abuse charges for using switch to discipline his son, will be activated for their week 3 match against the New Orleans Saints.
But after receiving criticism online and after news about another possible child abuse charges came out, Zygi Wilf and Mark Wilf issued another statement on Wednesday, announcing that Peterson will be deactivated indefinitely.
"While we were trying to make a balanced decision yesterday, after further reflection we have concluded that this resolution is best for the Vikings and for Adrian," the owners said in a statement. "We want to be clear: we have a strong stance regarding the protection and welfare of children, and we want to be sure we get this right. At the same time we want to express our support for Adrian."
The Wilf brothers also said that Peterson accepted the Vikings decision as he also wants to stay away from the team to avoid becoming a distraction to his teammates in their campaign this season.
"Adrian emphasized his desire to avoid further distraction to his teammates and coaches while focusing on his current situation; this resolution accomplishes these objectives as well," the Wilf brothers added. "We will support Adrian during this legal and personal process, but we firmly believe and realize this is the right decision."
While waiting for his case's resolution, Peterson, who is set to earn $11.75 million this season, will continue to receive full salary from the Vikings, but the running back will lose significant amount of earnings from sponsorship deals.
Nike announced that they will suspend Peterson's contract with the company without pay, saying that the apparel company is against domestic violence and child abuse.
"Nike in no way condones child abuse or domestic violence of any kind and has shared our concerns with the NFL," Nike spokesman KeJuan Wilkins said via ESPN. "We have suspended our contract with Adrian Peterson."
