Michael Brown Shooting and Ferguson Protests: Tensions Rise After Slain Teen's Memorial Burns Down
Dozens of protesters stormed the streets in Ferguson, Missouri late Tuesday night after a fire destroyed a memorial at the site where Michael Brown was killed by a police officer last month.
The death of the 18-year-old unarmed Brown, who was shot by a white police officer on Aug. 9, sparked national outrage and a string of protests in the St. Louis suburb. The police department maintains that Brown reached for Officer Darren Wilson's weapon before he was fatally shot, however several witnesses insist that the teen was shot execution style while he was trying to surrender.
Protesters say that the Brown memorial was intentionally destroyed early Tuesday morning around 6:45 a.m., and many people who live nearby became angry, USA Today reports.
Police, on the other hand, believe that the fire was ignited by a candle.
"We're all saddened by the fire that was reported at one of the Michael Brown Memorials this morning and are trying to obtain as much information as possible to determine what happened," Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson said in a statement, according to CBS St. Louis. "At this time the cause is unknown."
Around 9 p.m. local time Tuesday, about 200 protesters gathered on Canfield Drive in the area where the memorial burned down. However, some demonstrators became unruly and began looting a local beauty supply store on West Florissant Avenue, reports ABC News. There were also reports of gun shots, and at least two protesters were taken into custody by police.
Officials are currently investigating the fire's cause.
Community members rebuilt the memorial later on Tuesday.
Earlier this month, CNN released another video that seems to support witness accounts that Officer Wilson used excessive force when he opened fire. In the video, which was shot 40 seconds after the shooting, a witness standing about 50-feet away says Brown's hands were raised in the air when he was killed.
"He had his f-----g hands in the air," says a man in the video identified by CNN as a contractor doing working in the area. The same worker, who has asked to remain anonymous, also told CNN he heard one gunshot and then another about 30 seconds later.
"The cop didn't say get on the ground. He just kept shooting," the man said.
He added that he saw Brown's "brains come out of his head," before reiterating, that "his hands were up."
