Thursday night's episode of "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" aired some controversial content in a segment that forced the confrontation between Washington Redskins fans and Native American activists.

There has been a long-standing conflict about the derogatory connotation of the NFL team name. As the show opened, Stewart mentioned that there had been complaints among those filmed in the segment and that the piece was never edited to misrepresent comments made on the show.

"We learned later that some of the individuals who participated in the piece, they didn't enjoy the experience. It's something that happens a lot less than you would think," Stewart said before beginning the segment. "But we take the complaint seriously. We generally don't want people who participate in the show to have a bad experience. We work very hard to find real people who have real beliefs and want to express those beliefs on television, and we work hard to make sure that the gist of those beliefs are represented accurately, albeit sometimes comedically on our program.

"If we find out that someone in a piece was intentionally misled or if their comments were intentionally misrepresented, we do not air that piece," Stewart continued. "We would not air that piece. So that being said, I hope you enjoy the following piece."

What followed showed correspondent Jason Jones talking with Native American critics of the Redskins' name in one area and Washington fans in another. Team owner Daniel Snyder was seen in a clip claiming "redskin" was an honorable term, but interviewed Native Americans quickly quipped that the term is a dictionary-defined slur. The segment ended with a brief confrontation between fans and Native Americans.

Anticipation of the segment airing had been swirling on social media, especially after one Washington Redskins fan called police days after the filming, stating that she was forced into a threatening environment. After interview subjects were told initially that the segment would air last week, it instead aired Thursday, the same night the Redskins played the New York Giants.
