Oklahoma: Man Beheads Woman at Food Processing Plant After Getting Fired
Police say that a man used a knife to behead a woman on Thursday at an Oklahoma food processing plant soon after he was fired from the company.
Moore Police Sgt. Jeremy Lewis said that Alton Nolen, 30, has been accused of stabbing Colleen Hufford, 54, and cutting off her head at Vaughan Foods in Oklahoma City. He then attacked another worker named Traci Johnson, 43, before he was shot and wounded by a manager at the company.
After "he was terminated, he drove to the front of the business, running into a vehicle, exited his vehicle, entered the business, where he encountered the first victim, Colleen Hufford, 54, and began assaulting her with a knife. He did kill Colleen and he did sever her head, said Lewis during a Friday news conference, according to CNN.
Lewis also commended Mark Vaughan, a reserve sheriff's deputy and the company's COO, for taking action and shooting Nolen.
"This was not going to stop if he didn't stop it. It could have gotten a lot worse," Lewis told The Associated Press. "The threat had already stopped once we arrived."
Fortunately, Johnson survived the attack and was hospitalized in stable condition with "numerous knife wounds."
Police say they now are waiting until Nolen is conscious to arrest him.
Officials also believe that Nolen may have recently converted to a radical form of Islam and was trying to convert several employees.
Nolen was shot twice and was also hospitalized in stable condition.
"This off-duty deputy definitely saved Traci's life," Lewis said. "This was not going to stop if he didn't stop it. He's obviously a hero in this situation. It's very tragic that someone did lose their life, but it could have gotten a lot worse. This guy was definitely not going to stop. He didn't stop until he was shot."
However, U.S. law enforcement officials said there is no evident that the attack was linked to terrorism.
"We are shocked and deeply saddened by the events," Vaughan Foods spokeswoman Danielle Katcher said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of the team member we lost and all those affected, " Katcher added.
