NBA 2014-15 Season Preview: Blake Griffin Picks San Antonio Spurs As Title Favorites This Season
Los Angeles Clippers superstar Blake Griffin will look to lead his team to the title in the upcoming season, but he knows that they will have to defeat the San Antonio Spurs.
In an interview with GQ, Griffin said that the Spurs, who won the title last season in five games against the Miami Heat, are still the favorites to win it all in the 2014-15 NBA season because they have been very consistent over the past several years.
"I feel like you got to say the Spurs," Griffin said. "Just because, year after year, they never go away. They're like the model of success when it comes to building an NBA team."
Griffin also singled out veteran power forward Tim Duncan, saying that the 38-year-old will continue to play a big role for San Antonio despite being one of the oldest players in the league.
"Tim Duncan is another perfect example of a guy who's over the years lost athleticism but stayed right there at the highest level, because of his work ethic and the way he goes about it. So you can never count them out," Griffin said.
During the Spurs' media day on Friday, coach Gregg Popovich said he knows that expectations will be very high heading into the season, but his team is not thinking about that, as they are focused on taking it one game at a time.
"Just to be clear, we've never had any goals whatsoever in the sense of winning 'X' number of games or this year is our year to win a championship," Popovich said via ESPN. "All we've said is that we want to be the best team we can be at playoff time and that starts with the very first practice and it's a building block sort of thing."
The Spurs, who defeated the Heat in last year's final by an average margin of 14.5 points, will parade an intact squad in the upcoming season, while adding former UCLA standout Kyle Anderson, the 30th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft.
