‘Slender Man’: Stabbing Victim’s Parents Open Up About Brutal Attack
Parents of a 12-year-old girl who was stabbed 19 times by two of her classmates in an attempt to please a fictional online character are speaking out to the media about their daughter's recovery.
The victim, Payton Leutner of Waukesha, Wisconsin, was attacked on May 31 in a wooded park after being lured into the remote area by two of her young friends following a sleepover. The girls, Anissa Weir and Morgan Geyser, both 12, were reportedly friends of Leutner's yet they proceeded to stab her 19 times across her arms, abdomen and legs. Weir and Geyser then left their friend bleeding to death. Leutner was able to crawl away until a cyclist came upon her and called 911.
When authorities questioned the two attackers, the girls responded that they planned and carried out the attack to win the favor of Slender Man, a fictional bogeyman based from an Internet meme that went viral originally in 2009.
Slender Man is a "mythical creature is often depicted as an unnaturally tall, thin figure with a blank, featureless face, wearing a black suit," the Daily Mail reported. "It is said to stalk, abduct and traumatize children and, depending on interpretations of the myth, can cause memory loss, insomnia and paranoia."
In a recent interview with ABC, Payton's mother, Stacie Leutner said her daughter was fearful of this Slender Man from stories the girls had sent her. Payton had said her friends believed the Slender Man was real, but her mother dismissed it as a child's fantasy.
However, the fantasy became very real in late May when the Leutner's heard their daughter was in the hospital.
"She was as pale as a ghost. She was terrified, she was crying, she couldn't breathe," Stacie Leutner said in the ABC '20/20' interview with David Muir. "And I said, 'You're going to be OK, it's going to be fine,' but I could see that she was covered, her arms, her legs, abdomen, were covered in stab wounds. And all I hear is, 'there's five on her arm, there's seven on her leg,' and I'm thinking, 'Seven? What?'"
Payton spent weeks in the hospital and at home recovering and has since returned to school. Her attackers are being tested to see if they are mentally fit to stand trial.
