Derek Jeter Career & Final At-Bat: Yankees Star Wraps Up Career with Infield Single in Boston
Legendary shortstop Derek Jeter walked off the field for the last time on Sunday after hitting an infield single at Fenway park.
After the final game of a wonderful two-decade career, Jeter felt content leaving the game of baseball and said he had "a blast" playing for the Yankees.
"Listen, I had an opportunity to do what I wanted to do, the only thing that I ever wanted to do. I know that not a lot of people can say that. I've been fortunate. I've had fun. There is not a thing I would change," Jeter said.
The All-Star shortstop already has started working for Jeter Publishing but will take some time off as well.
Jeter's last game at Yankee Stadium was definitely the perfect ending for him. He singled home the game's winning run in the bottom of the ninth in walk-off fashion. After that game, Jeter fought off tears, but in Sunday's post game conference, Jeter was rather unemotional.
"You can't top off what happened on Thursday," Jeter said. "I don't care if I came to Boston and hit a home run in every single at-bat. If I hit four home runs, while I was here. For me, personally, it couldn't top what happened. New York has been a special place for me. The way that game ended, at home, you couldn't have written a script that I would've bought into it."
A fitting end for Jeter was to play against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. A bitter rivalry for decades, Jeter was part of many epic games against the Red Sox. The tables changed a little bit on his last game though.
Instead of being hollered at by fans, Jeter was embraced and accepted by fans from Boston as well as those who came from New York to see his last game.
"For them to flip the script this last time coming here, it made me feel extremely proud that I was part of this rivalry," Jeter said.
Take a look at some of Jeter's stats from his 20-plus year career:
In 2747 career games: Jeter had 3,465 hits, 260 home runs and 1,311 RBIs. He also had a lifetime batting average of .310.
