Robin Williams Death: Actor's Memorial In San Francisco Draws Dozens Of Stars; Billy Crystal 'In Tears'
On Saturday Sept. 27, Billy Crystal held a private memorial celebration in honor of comedian Robin Williams. The list of attendees was quite exclusive, including many of the late actor's co-stars, directors friends and family.
The event was held at the Curran Theater in San Francisco and the reception followed after at the Grand Ballroom at the Westin St. Francis. The program included personal remembrances by Whoopi Goldberg, Bobcat Goldthwait, Bonie Hunt and Eric Idle. The event even included a tremendous performance by Stevie Wonder and San Francisco's GLIDE Memorial Choir.
The very famous program being posted on People Magazine and Variety also included a poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson, "To Laugh Often and Much."
"To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of the intelligent people
and the affection of children;
to earn the appreciation of honest critics...."
At the end of the memorial Billy Crystal gave his final tribute. "He was in tears" said an attendee. "One of the most moving parts was when Susan recounted the day they met at the Apple store." Another guest said.
Susan, Williams' wife, along with his children Zelda, Cody and Zak all shared emotional tributes with the people present at the event. Other big names who joined Crystal to give Robin Williams a last goodbye were Bette Midler, Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor, George Lucas, Penny Marshall, Danny De Vito, Rhea Perlman, Joel McHale, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Gus Van Sant, Chris Columbus, Jeff Bridges, Minnie Driver, Marlo Thomas, Governor Jerry Brown, Nancy Pelosi, Josh Groban, Seth Green, Eddie Izzard, Richard Lewis, and his Mork & Mindycostar Pam Dawber.
Robert Williams took his life on August 11, 2014. The comedian and actor was 63-years-old, and had dealt with alcoholism and depression on and off through his life and career. His wife Susan revealed to the press that Williams had recently been diagnosed with early-stage Parkinson's Disease. Still it was a shocking and sad day when the great soul of Robin Williams left the world.
