Michael Brown Shooting and Ferguson Protests: Police Arrest 12 Protesters for 'Inciting Violence'
Another night of protests in Ferguson, Missouri ended with the arrest of a dozen people, including a journalist.
Protesters calling for justice for Michael Brown, the unarmed Black teenager who was shot by a white police officer on Aug. 9, clashed with police as they rallied near a police station.
Video of the protest obtained by KTVI-TV shows law enforcement officers walking toward the protesters in front of the police station. It also shows the cops arresting the demonstrators who were either standing on the sidewalk or in the street. Twelve people were taken into custody, according to Q13 Fox News.
According to Democratic Committee Woman Patricia Bynes, who attended the protest, law enforcement officers announced they were arresting anyone who uses language that incites violence.
The Washington Post reports that cops told the protesters that they were being charged for as "inciting violence" and "failure to obey" as they were being arrested. They were reportedly chanting "Show me what democracy looks like" during their clash with police.
Among those arrested was a woman named Mary Moore who works as a freelance journalist for CNN, although the charges were not immediately disclosed.
"What a remarkable display of making your own rules as you go," Bynes said. "They took the journalist who was doing her job and wasn't involved."
St. Louis County Police say there was no violence last night, but some of the protesters were using obscene language.
The death of the 18-year-old Michael Brown has sparked national outrage and a string of protests in the St. Louis suburb. The police department maintains that Brown reached for Officer Darren Wilson's weapon before he was fatally shot. However several witnesses insist that the teen was shot execution style while he was trying to surrender. Protesters are demanding that Wilson be charged with murder.
