Katy Perry Songs 2014: 'Roar' Singer to Perform at Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show
Katy Perry, singer of hits like "California Girls" and "Roar," will be performing at the upcoming Super Bowl during its popular halftime show. The news was confirmed on Thursday.
Billboard first confirmed the rumors that Katy Perry would perform at Super Bowl XLIX in February. The NFL chose Perry, 29, over the British band Coldplay and Rihanna, perhaps opting for Perry's more family-friendly aura.
The announcement comes after it surfaced in the last couple of months that the NFL was planning a "pay to play" scheme for the shortlisted artists. According to the Wall Street Journal, the NFL had asked the artists if they would be willing to participate in the plan, hoping to entice them with the promise of increased exposure and sales.
However, the artists apparently coolly turned down the organization's offers. Last season's Super Bowl halftime show earlier this year featured Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, bringing 111.5 million viewers. The NFL just wanted a cut of the profits since the organization pays for the performer's expenses.
Perry, responding to the pay for play offer, told ESPN's "College Game Day," "I'm not the kind of girl who would pay to play the Super Bowl," according to Page Six.
However, it is uncertain how much the NFL was willing to ask for since the organization's contracts with performers are confidential.
The NFL may hope to bring in more viewers this year with Perry thanks to her universal appeal as well as strong fan base. Her Twitter account has 55.4 million followers.
The singer is currently performing in her Prismatic Tour to promote her album "Prism"; however, Yahoo Sports pointed out that the European part of the tour will not begin until after the Super Bowl, leaving a gap for Perry's performance.
The Super Bowl will be held in Phoenix, Arizona on Feb. 1, 2015.
