World Cup winners Germany were upset 2-0 on Saturday by Poland in the Euro 2016 qualifiers on Saturday while LA Galaxy's Robbie Keane scored a hat-trick for the Republic of Ireland against Gibraltar to lead his team to a 7-0 victory.

Poland had not beaten Germany in 18 previous games but behind Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny's strong performance, the team managed to shut out a German squad coming off last month's victory over Scotland. Sebastian Mila scored in the 19th minute while Ajax's Arkadiusz Milik's header in the 51st minute sealed the game for Poland.

"I can't fault the team, but perhaps we should have made more of our chances," said German head coach Joachim Low regarding misses by Karim Bellarabi, Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels. "After a loss you always need to show a good reaction."

Keane scored early in the 6th minute, the 14th minute, and a penalty shot in 18th minute leading the way for Ireland as they defeated Gibraltar at Aviva Stadium in Dublin. Keane now has 21 goals, becoming the goal leader in European qualifiers history.

"He's 34 years of age. He's spent a little time in America but it doesn't seem to have affected him too much," said Ireland coach Martin O'Neill.

On Friday, Belgium cruised past Andorra 6-0 despite Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany leaving the game early in the second half with an injury. The Netherlands cut down an early deficit on Saturday against Kazakhstan to win 3-1, while Giorgio Chiellini bailed himself out making the winning goal in Italy's 2-1 win over Azerbaijan.

Renat Abdulin of Kazakhstan scored in the 18th minute, heading a corner past the keeper to silence the PSV Stadium crowd in Eindhoven. But Klaas Jan Huntelaar tied the game up in the 62nd minute for the Dutch while Ibrahim Afellay would tie the match in the 82th minute before a penalty kick converted by Robin van Persie after Abdulin fouled Van Persie in the box sealed things for the Netherlands 3-1 victory.

Chiellini scored early for Italy against Azerbaijan heading Andrea Pirlo's cross but gave up the lead after he knocked the ball past his own keeper, Gianluigi Buffon, trying to clear out a corner kick for an own-goal to tie the match. Chiellini saved the day for Italy heading Sebastian Giovinco's cross in the 81st minute to break the tie and win 2-1.

Spain and Switzerland were upset in Thursday's Euro 2016 qualifier action, while England won easily in a 5-0 romp over San Marino while and Russia and Sweden played to a draw.

Spain went down early after Slovakia's Juraj Kucka blasted a free kick past Spanish keeper Iker Casillas. Valencia CF's Paco Alcacer tied the game in the 82nd minute but Miroslav Stoch caught Casillas out of postion to break the draw in the 87th minute giving Slovakia the 2-1 win.

"We showed patience but we were not effective and their keeper was superb," said Spain coach Vicente del Bosque.

Slovenia keeper Samir Handanovic flustered Switzerland while Johan Djourou cost the Swiss the game after taking down Kevin Kampl in the box for penalty. Milivoje Novakovic converted the penalty kick for a 1-0 victory to send the home crowd at Petrol Areba in the city of Celje home happy.

At Nya Ullevi in Göteborg, the Swedish fell behind at home after Russia's Aleksandr Kokorin scored in the 11th minute to give the Russians an early lead. Sweden almost tied it quickly after Igor Smolinkov fouled Sweden's Jimmy Durmaz in the box but Sunderland Sebastian Larsson missed the penalty kick for Swedes. Ola Toivonen would later tie the game in the 50th minute with game ending in a 1-1 draw.

English team captain Wayne Rooney scored for England in their 5-0 blowout win over San Marino. Rooney was making his second start as captain in front of a 55,990 fans in Wembley Stadium and earned his 42nd international goal after converting a penalty kick in the 43rd minute. Rooney was kicked in the face in the penalty area as England was pressing. The converted PK leaves Rooney seven short of Sir Bobby Charlton's career record.

Arsenal's Danny Welbeck, Everton's Phil Jagielka, Tottenham Hotspur's Andros Townsend all scored for England with while San Marino's Alessandro Della scored an own-goal to add salt to the wounds.

"It's a great feeling, it's something that as a young boy you dream of," said Rooney to the BBC. "To actually do it is a great honor in which I'll cherish for the rest of my life."
