Apple's iPad Mini 2 has a new rival: the Google Nexus 8 Tablet, which runs on the new Android L platform and has a 64-bit chip, PC Advisor reports. It is said to follow in the footsteps of the highly successful Nexus 7. Nexus 8 is believed to be the same size as the iPad Mini but is more powerful and packed with additional features.

Based on what is known so far, Nexus 8 will have two cameras and infrared depth sensors, superb LCD display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and Quad HD resolution. This will render three dimensional pictures with great precision and sharpness. 

The unit is likely to be sold at around $399 in the U.S. although everything is still not confirmed. Google Nexus 8 reportedly will have an 8.9-inch display with a 2048 x 1440 resolution, which is a big improvement from the Nexus 7. The case is made of aluminum, with a thickness of 0.31 inches and the tablet will weigh about 418g.

Other features include the NVIDIA Logan 64 bit processor called Tegra 1, 2GB of RAM and possibly the option to choose between a 16GB or 32GB internal storage capacity.

Everything is still up in the air as there are various rumors circulating about the releases of the latest gadgets from Google. There is a rumor that Nexus 9 will be unveiled on Oct. 16 when the latest Android platform is launched. In that case the Nexus 8 may come later. Earlier reports said that Google will partner with Asus for Nexus 8, and then it was announced that it would be partnering with HTC for this particular version, although there were also rumors that the partner for Nexus 8 is LG.

The latest update says that Nexus 8 will be launched on Oct. 15 or 16 together with the launch of Android 5, which is officially named Lollipop.
