Washington Man Opens Fire on Police Cars, Stations in 3 Towns
Police in Washington State shot and arrested a man who allegedly opened fire on several police stations and police cars in Snohomish County on Wednesday. Only one officer was injured during the shooting spree.
According to the Snohomish County Sheriff's office, the hour-long spree began around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday when the suspect shot at an unmanned patrol car at the Granite Falls Police Department in the town of Great Falls. He then drove a white pickup truck to the Lake Stevens Police Department headquarters and opened fire.
KCPQ-TV reported that police cars were also targeted in Lake Stevens, however no one was hurt in the first two incidents.
Subsequently, law enforcement officials located and followed the truck into the town of Marysville, where he shot at a patrol car before he was eventually wounded and taken into police custody.
The suspect, who has been identified as a 43-year-old man from Granite Falls, was reported to be in grave condition by KCPQ early Thursday.
Snohomish County Sheriff's spokeswoman Shari Ireton said that a Marysville police sergeant was taken to an Everett hospital to be treated for a non-life threatening wound, before he was released. It was not immediately clear whether the 19-year veteran was injured from a gunshot or flying debris.
Lake Stevens Police Commander Dennis Taylor said the man used a "high-capacity" rifle to fire "many" shots and that the police vehicles were hit "many times."
A 17-year-old Marysville resident named Mackenzie Harris told KOMO-TV that she was outside when she saw the pickup truck get pulled over by officers. The driver then pulled out a gun and started shooting.
"We heard gunshots, so we ran inside," said the teen. "While we were running up to my room, we heard, like, two dozen more shots being fired. We walked back down stairs and heard cops screaming and a bunch of yelling."
Police have not identified a motive in the attack.
