Samsung Chromebook 2 Price, Deal & Review 2014: Company Commits to US Market with New Chromebook Option
Several PC makers are releasing Google Chromebooks with hopes of taking advantage of the cheap laptop market in the U.S. Among those is Samsung, which is set to release an aggressively-priced Chromebook later this month.
Samsung released two Chromebook 2 models earlier this year but has recommitted to the market with the a new 11.6-inch Chromebook 2 that will sell for $250, according to a report from The Verge.
The new Samsung model became available for preorder on Friday and officially will go on sale Oct. 20. This version of the Chromebook 2 is powered by an Intel Celeron N2840 chip that is capable of running at up to 2.58GHz.
Samsung's previous two Chromebook 2 models, which were released earlier this year, run a chip made by the South Korean company and have 4GB of memory. But the latest model only has 2GB of memory, meaning that users may have to cut back on the number of tabs they open on the Internet.
Other Chromebook models come with much more storage capacity, such as the Acer C720P, which offers 16GB of RAM. But even this model relies heavily on cloud storage, as Google intended when it introduced the wallet-friendly Chromebook.
Previous Chromebook models, including Samsung's earlier efforts, have raised concerns over durability, but the company said it has addressed these issues with the latest Chromebook 2.
The machine's four corners and its USB ports have been reinforced with metal, and Samsung has added a metal frame behind the display. The Chromebook 2 still won't be able to stand up to spilled liquids, though rumors have hinted that such an update could be coming soon.
With the implementation of an Intel processor in its new Chromebooks, Samsung seems to be taking aim at other Chromebook makers, which largely use Intel chips, Business Insider reported.
The Intel chip is made for use in laptops, while the Samsung processors -- which come in the company's earlier Chromebook 2s -- are more for tablets and smartphones. The Intel chip should make the new Chromebook capable of more tasks than the previous Samsung models.
