Here's our breakdown of how the Galaxy Note 3 stacks up against the Galaxy Note 4.

Pros and Cons of the Galaxy Note 3

The Galaxy Note 3 is slightly lighter than its successor. Released over a year ago, even by today's standards the phablet is almost unmatched in its performance. It features a 2.3-GHz quad-core processor supported by 3GB RAM. With its 2.7-GHz CPU, the Note 4 cannot be deemd as a major improvement. The Galaxy Note 3 still maintains a performance level that is almost unrivalled in the industry.

The Galaxy Note 3 may have been launched initially with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, it can
however be upgraded to Android KitKat. As expected from any predecessor, the Note 3 has
some shortfalls. The display isn't as vivid and colorful, as it supports 1080x1920 pixels
against the Note 4's 1440x2560 pixels. Primary and secondary cameras are also not as powerful.

Pros and Cons of the Galaxy Note 4

The 16-megapixel camera in the Galaxy Note 4 is a notable upgrade over the 13-megapixel
lens in the Note 3. Besides, the secondary camera has a 3.7-megapixel lens against the
Galaxy Note 3's 2-megapixel front camera. The Note 4's storage can be expanded to 128GB,
compared to its predecessor's maximum capacity of 64GB. The Galaxy Note 4 has a true
"phablet" form factor, while the Note 3 had a "bar" design. The 3220 mAh battery may not
be too large compared to its predecessor's, but it supports fast charging technology that could charge the battery to 50% within 30 minutes.

The Galaxy Note 4 may have some important upgrades over its predecessor, but it is still
considered to be expensive for its segment. It lacks IP67 certification for water resistance, and in general it needs to be more rugged to be able to withstand rougher handling, as it seems to be more delicate.

Specs

The Galaxy Note 3 is available in three storage configurations - 16GB, 32GB and 64GB, all
with 3GB RAM. The Android Jelly Bean OS can be upgraded to KitKat. Other main features
of the phablet include a 5.7-inch display, a 2.3-GHz quad-core CPU, 13-megapixel primary
camera and 2-megapixel secondary camera, and up to 21 hours of talktime.

The Galaxy Note 4 is available in a single 32GB configuration that can be upgraded to
128GB. It has a similar 5.7-inch display as the Note 3, but with a higher pixel density of 515
ppi. Other main features include a 16-megapixel primary and 3.7-megapixel secondary
camera, Android KitKat, a 2.7-GHz quad-core CPU and up to 20 hours to talktime.

Talking Points

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 was unveiled exactly a year after its predecessor was released to markets around the world. Samsung brings some notable improvements in its phablet-series.

Prices

The Galaxy Note 3 is currently available on Amazon at around $495.90. The Galaxy Note 4
on the other hand, comes with a price tag of $974.

Conclusion

The Galaxy Note 4 is not a major upgrade over the Note 3, but it is still almost unmatched in
its class given that its predecessor was already unrivalled and miles ahead of the competition.
But the upgrade to the new Samsung phablet can be quite expensive.
