Local police in Mexico are being questioned after a 14-year-old pregnant American girl was shot and injured during a high-speed car chase in the northern city of Reynosa.

The shooting took place Sunday around midnight when a male driver refused to comply with police orders to stop his vehicle outside a convenience store near the border of Reynosa and Texas. Instead, the driver sped off in a pick-up truck and police began shooting at the tires, reports Reuters.

Once the vehicle came to a stop, the driver fled and the girl was found in the truck with a wound in her stomach. She was then taken to a hospital. The Tamaulipas state prosecutor's office announced late Monday that the teen and her four-month-old fetus did not sustain life-threatening injuries. The prosecutor's office also stated that the police officers would be questioned in the case, reports KHOU.

Last month, three Americans from Texas were fatally shot near the border of the city of Matamoros, leading investigators to question a local Mexican police officer who may have been involved in the incident, reports the New York Daily News.

Pedro Alvarado identified the victims as his three children, Erica Alvarado Rivera, 26, Alex, 22, and Jose Angel, 21. The siblings, along with Erica's boyfriend, Jose Guadalupe Castaneda, went missing on Oct. 13, while they were visiting their father in Mexico.

Each was found with a gunshot in the head and their bodies were burned, most likely since they were placed in the sun, Attorney General Ismael Quintanilla Acosta said.

"They were coming back, stopped to eat at a place called Roasted Meat Curve, and from there they got taken away," Alvarado said, reports the Los Angeles Times. "I went looking for them in Matamoros, and they didn't turn up, until just yesterday. I identified the bodies."
