"He was hurt on many things concerning his father," Pabon said. "To me, as a friend, I would have liked for the two of them ... to have reached peace. Unfortunately, Huguito is no longer here."
Pabon added that he was very sad about his friend's passing because Portugal was a hard worker and sensible. He was looking to make it on his own without being in his father's shadow.
"I shared many things with him," he said. "He vented with me and I vented with him. It really hit me because, although I didn't see him daily, he was a great friend. I say it openly, I had a lot of affection for him. I will remember him as he was: a very happy person. ... This is the image that remains of my friend, Hugo Sanchez."

The newspaper was filled with images of Sanchez's beginnings, achievements and best moments. It also had picture of Sanchez's other family, and there was nothing about Portugal in it.
Portugal and his sister were said to be proud of their father's professional achievements, but they were never able to mend their relationship.
