Floyd Mayweather Next Fight: Will Boxing Star Face Gennady Golovkin or Amir Khan?
Boxing fans still want to see Floyd Mayweather Jr. face Manny Pacquiao in 2015, but Gennady Golovkin and Amir Khan might also get a chance to collide with the reigning pound-for-pound king next year.
John David Jackson, trainer of world light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev, said in an interview with On The Ropes Boxing Radio that Mayweather should forget about facing Pacquiao and collide with Golovkin instead.
Jackson said that Golovkin, who holds a perfect 31-0 record with 28 knockouts, deserves a shot against Mayweather because he has the tools to hand the unbeaten champion the first defeat of his illustrious boxing career.
"One thing about Golovkin is he's coming right at you, he's coming to knock your head off, he's not afraid of you. He's just like Sergey, he's coming right at you to knock your head off," Jackson said. "It would test two things, how much Floyd really has left and can he keep the younger man off of him with his defensive skills? Offensively I don't think he would be able to keep the kid off of him because he doesn't punch hard enough."
Jackson pointed out that the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight has lost its luster over the past several years, reiterating that Mayweather is already slipping, while Pacquiao took a devastating sixth-round knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez next year.
Unbeaten world lightweight champion Terence Crawford also told On The Ropes Boxing Radio that he wants Mayweather to collide with Pacquiao.
Crawford quickly added, though, that Amir Khan is a more deserving opponent than Pacquiao at this point, saying that the Briton has the perfect tools to become a serious threat to Mayweather.
"I would really like to see Floyd fight Amir Khan or Pacquiao, just so he could solidify his greatness and shut a lot of people up that doubt him," Crawford said. "I think the Amir Khan fight would be a tougher fight for him than Pacquiao being that the size that Amir Khan brings to the table and the height and the speed."
Mayweather, who improved to 47-0 this year after scoring two consecutive wins against Marcos Maidana, has yet to reveal a list of possible opponents for his next fight that will likely be scheduled on May 2 in Las Vegas.
