San Jose State University Official Says Latinas Do Not Have the DNA to Be Successful
A San Jose State University foundation board member and donor claimed that Latinas do not have the DNA to be successful, sparking a protest against their offensive comments on the school's campus.
It has been reported that during February board meeting where the university president was present, Wanda Ginner, an alumna and board member for the university's Tower Foundation since 2007 said, "I contribute to this university because these little Latinas do not have the DNA to be successful."
It wasn't until San Jose State Professor Maria Luisa Alaniz and other campus employees met with SJSU President Mo Qayoumi that the incident came to light. They talked about receiving a complaint from an administrator who attended the meeting where the comment was stated.
Ginner denied making the comments. She said she called the meeting to draw attention to the disservice the university has been paying to Latinos in terms of admissions and financial aid.
"I didn't say that," Ginner told the San Jose Mercury News. "Not only did I not say that, I'm the whistle-blower."
The university president said, "Ensuring a tolerant, inclusive and welcoming environment for every SJSU community member is a campus and personal priority."
He added, "We are especially sensitive to issues of tolerance and civility in the wake of the racially motivated actions against a student in our residence halls in 2013."
Last year, four San Jose State University students were charged with misdemeanor hate crimes after abusing a black roommate.
Reports on the incident showed that the university was slow to respond to the students' abuse. The black student was barricaded in his room while the suspects wrote racial slurs on a whiteboard and hung a Confederate flag in their suite.
Following the investigation on Ginner's comments, she and Vice President for University Advancement Rebecca Dukes resigned.
