On Nov. 25, plenty of celebrities grabbed red lipstick to bring attention to the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

The online movement featured men and women wearing lipstick and using the hashtag #NiConElPetalodeUnaRosa (Not Even With a Rose Petal). The campaign started in Colombia, and it encourages others to also paint their lips rip to stand with the women and girls who have been physically abused, notes La Patria.

J Balvin, Fernando Sorzano, Jorge Bernal, Maria Cecilia Botero and Norma Nivia are just a few who have participated.

Organizers are hoping that people like James Rodriguez or president Juan Manuel Santos also paint their lips.

The United Nations explains why violence against women is an important cause.

"Violence against women continues to be a global pandemic," the site said. "Violence against women and girls is not inevitable. Prevention is possible and essential."

The site further explains that the date Nov. 25 was chosen to honor the Mirabal sisters. They were from the Dominican Republic and they were assassinated under the Trujillo Era, which is named after President Rafael Trujillo and is known as one of the bloodiest periods in the Dominican Republic.

"All 3 sisters were natives of the Dominican Republic and were fervently opposed to the cruel dictatorship of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo," according to the Mirabal Sisters Cultural and Community Center site. "The tale of the Mirabal sisters is an ongoing legacy of bravery and compassion in order to save the lives of many many people in the Dominican Republic."

The United Nations website says that around the world, 35 percent of women will experience abuse in one way or another.

The site further explains that "the costs and consequence of violence against women last for generations."
