A man was killed and a woman injured from a double shooting inside the Nordstrom department store on Chicago's Magnificent Mile during Black Friday shopping, authorities said.

According to eyewitness reports, the man and woman were arguing when he shot her, then turned the gun on himself.

Store employee Janis Tillman said the shooting occurred on the first floor of the store shortly after 8:30 p.m. She said she was working in the shoe department of the Grand Avenue store when she heard a loud bang, and she dropped to the floor when another shot rang out.

"I just heard two shots," she said. "We all ran. Everybody started running to the back of the store."

Police said that the man knew the woman he shot. The shooter died on the scene. The woman was in critical condition late Friday night at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she was transported after the shooting.

"I was right around the corner when an eyewitness came out. I said, 'What happened?' She said, 'I saw somebody. I saw the guy pull out a gun, shot her, and then he then shot himself,'" shopper Bob Rogers said. "She was shaken. Very shaken."

Following the shooting, the store was evacuated of all shoppers on the busiest shopping holiday of the year. Police taped off the scene and were not allowing customers to return as of 10 p.m. Friday.

"It's one of the friendliest stores there is," Rogers said. "You don't expect it to happen right here."

Chicago Police Chief of Detectives John J. Escalante said that the female victim worked at Nordstrom as a seasonal employee. He added that the incident appeared domestic-related.

"No other people who were in the store were shot or hurt," Escalante added. "No other people who were in the store were threatened."
